I will not be the miserable

Let's get this out of the way: the world is pretty shit right now. Politics, technology, capitalism, oligarchy, freedom, economics. THE FUTURE.

There are a lot of bad things happening, a lot of uncertainty around everything...and it's stressful.

I am stating the obvious, reader, to let you know that I am not unaware of these things. I am CHOOSING not to talk about them here, on this blog.

Why?

One of the things that contributes to most of the internet sucking these days is that the topics I mentioned above are everywhere. They encroach on every space, or so it seems. Some of this discourse is good. Productive. Necessary, even. But it's not necessary everywhere. It's not necessary here.

A few years ago, a co-worker accused me of engaging in toxic positivity. We had recently completed a mandatory corporate training on microaggressions (remember those?), so everyone was on high alert for any potential offending behaviors.

I was confused. I didn't understand what I had done wrong. After getting to know this person a bit better, I came to understand the situation: the miserable love nothing more than to share their misery. In the context of their current experience, anyone not willing to engage at that level was an aggressor.

I would not engage then, and I will not engage now.

I will not be the miserable. I don't want to live it, and I don't want to share it with you.
